Satisfy Your Summer Travel FOMO While At Work or An Internship

By Ashley Paskill on May 20, 2018

For many, summer is a time to kick of their shoes and relax. However, for several others, summer is a time to get ahead by interning in their major or making money for the upcoming school year. This can lead to a major case of fear of missing out, also known as FOMO. If you fall into this category, there are things you can do to at least temporarily satisfy your wanderlust.

1. If you can take a vacation, do so. Otherwise, take a day trip or two on your days off.

If you are in an internship, ask your supervisor in the interview how they handle time off and see if you are allowed to. If you are working for money, most times, you are allowed to take off, even if it is not paid time off (though some places allow part-timers to have this). Enjoy the time off if you can get it, but if not, take day trips with friends or family when you do have time off.

2. Stay focused on your goals

If you are at an internship, stay focused on the career you are working towards. Your future self will thank you and your internship supervisor will appreciate your hard work and steadfast effort. For those earning money, think of the money you are bringing in as you work and are saving by not going on vacations (this is hard, I know).

3. Stop comparing yourself to social media

If you are unable to travel to a foreign nation or tropical destination for whatever reason, whether it is work or internship related or just an inability to pay for a big, elaborate trip, it can be easy to compare yourself to your friends on social media. However, your life circumstances are different and you are working hard. Try your best to not compare yourself. You never know if they missed out on their dream job or internship this summer, so try to keep perspective.

4. Read a book

Can’t make it to your dream destination? Go there in your mind by reading a book about the city or country. Whether it is a fiction novel or nonfiction biography, reading a book can easily transport you to the place you dream of. This will not only satisfy your travel cravings (if for a little bit), but it can also motivate you to get to your dream travel place someday soon.

5. Enjoy some time outside

Take your lunch breaks outside. This is especially convenient if you are working or interning in a city that has outdoor seating and benches near your job or internship. Even if you work or intern in the suburbs, you can escape for lunch by taking your food to a local park. Be sure to keep track of your time. Getting some fresh air can help you satisfy your outdoor cravings.
